What does this name “By Way of Science” mean anyway?

I was inspired by the fantastic Julie Miller song “By Way of Sorrow.” Despite having no particular relevance for what I’m about here on this blog, I’m also a fan of modern folk music, and so a tip of the hat to Julie for this great song. (A further hat tip to the folk “supergroup” Cry Cry Cry, who first exposed me to this song.)

In some ways, the lyrics of the song also echo my own journey in science.

You have come by way of sorrow
You have come by way of tears
But you'll reach your destiny
Meant to find you all these years

And further, everything about the way I see the world has been colored by the fact that I come “by way of science.” There's a pun in there also-("byway" vs "by way")-and this gets at the fact that I would like to drift down some of the lesser-traveled paths in science with this blog.

Nicely also captured in this phrase is my feeling that I’ve come “by way of science” to other places as well… to a full experience of life in all its richness and all its ways of knowing.
